Our Hotel is situated in the beautiful seaside town of Barmouth, on the West Coast of Wales.

Barmouth, also known as Abermaw or Y Bermo in Welsh, is the most popular coastal resort in southern Snowdonia, with spectacular views of Cardigan Bay and the lovely harbour. Abermaw Beach, the town's beach, is west facing and has a blend of sand and fine shingle, making it perfect for lounging and watersports.

We offer a gateway to the majestic mountains of Snowdonia, and there are many more activities in and around Barmouth for the family to enjoy. We have a beautiful outdoor bar overlooking the estuary with a spectacular view, perfect for enjoying with a glass of carefully selected wine.

Places to eat in and around Barmouth

Bistro Bermo

British Cuisine - All dishes are cooked fresh on the premises using carefully selected ingredients combining excellent Welsh sources and producers with the best that the rest of the world offers. Bistro Bermo offers a fine dining experience.

The Bank

British / European - The Bank is situated in the old renovated NatWest bank and brings a contemporary venue to Barmouth serving an inventive menu of locally sourced seasonal ingredients. A well-balanced wine list and a tempting selection of cocktails are on offer to complement.

The Bay Restaurant

Seafood / British - The Bay Restaurant overlooks the most magnificent Coastal views of Cardigan Bay, with breath taking sunsets throughout the year from your table in the restaurant or from the large beer garden. The menu is home cooked foods using the freshest of seasonal local produce.

Foxglove

A vegan restaurant in the heart of Barmouth offering a five course set menu of organic and locally sourced products and foraged food.

The Captains Table

European - The Captains Table can be found on Church Street serving a wide variety of dishes. They offer a classic restaurant menu with a good selection of meat, fish, vegetarian and pasta dishes.

The Last Inn

One of Wales’ most famous pubs with traditional inglenooks and Ships beams. Here you can enjoy a quiet pint or a tasty British meal.

Historical

Harlech Castle

None of Edward I’s mighty coastal fortresses has a more spectacular setting Harlech Castle crowns a sheer rocky crag overlooking the dunes far below – waiting in vain for the tide to turn and the distant sea to lap at its feet once again.

No further drama is really required but, just in case, the rugged peaks of Snowdonia rise as a backdrop. Against fierce competition from Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris, this is probably the most spectacular setting for any of Edward I’s castles in North Wales. All four are designated as a World Heritage Site.

Harlech was completed from ground to battlements in just seven years under the guidance of gifted architect Master James of St George. Its classic ‘walls within walls’ design make the most of daunting natural defences.

Tŷ Crwn

This unusual building was constructed to lock-up the drunks and ne’er-do-wells that must have frequented a busy port like Barmouth. It was built in 1833, at the orders of the local magistrates, to a circular design so that the Devil would have no corners to hide in! The space was divided into two halves by a curtain wall to enable the holding of male and female drunks separately.

There are newspaper accounts of people being locked up for merely being without a home for the night – for their own safety! The interior has been partly restored and includes two figures showing what life was like as a prisoner in the 1830's.

Criccieth Castle

Criccieth Castle is a famous North Wales landmark, perched on a promontory between two beaches. It's also a historically significant place, one of the few castles with a foot in both camps and a true witness to war's fluctuating fortunes.

Criccieth's history is intertwined with the mediaeval battle between Wales and England, and among the information boards on site are numerous anecdotes about the town and how often it changed hands. The castle is in a state of disrepair, so don't expect vast hallways and spiralling stairs; instead, encourage the kids to use their imaginations!

Mountain & Coastal Walks

The Mawddach Trail

This trail leads across the bridge and into Dolgellau, a small town on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, across the estuary is the famous Blue Lake, which offers amazing views of the Mawddach estuary and the Irish sea.

The area is well known for cycling and the Coed y Brenin visitor centre where cycle trails are available for the whole family, no matter what your abilities are.

Cader Idris is one of the highest southern mountains in Snowdonia and can be climbed easily in a day.

Coastal Path

From Barmouth, the Wales Coast Path heads south to Llwyngwril. Crossing the Mawddach estuary is made easier as you can cross Pont Abermaw / Barmouth Bridge, rather than the long detour to Dolgellau that you’d otherwise need to walk. Though there’s been a dispute between the local council and Network Rail about public access to the bridge, and it may well be closed at some point in the near future if there’s no agreement on funding.

The route then heads uphill, while taking you away from the shore, does at least allow for some excellent walking with some high level views of the Snowdonia coast a highlight of the section.

Barmouth Circular Walk

This walk provides extensive views of both the stunning landscape along the Mawddach estuary and far-reaching views of the Llŷn Peninsula. It heads upwards behind the town via Dinas Olau to the well-trodden Panorama Walk, returning across attractive farmland and descending back to the town via woodland. The walk can be extended further on the coast towards Llanaber, returning to Barmouth via the Wales Coast Path.

Watersports & Local Activities

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

SUP is the fastest growing water sport in the world as it's so easy to learn to do! It's is a great fun outdoor activity for all the family and a great laugh for a group of friends! SUP Barmouth are based at Merioneth Yacht Club in Barmouth Harbour.

It's a different way to see the beautiful surroundings of the Mawddach estuary from the water, whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced paddler, they have a variety of SUP experiences available to suit everyone.
